Until recently this was a busy bookshop where hundreds of books stood tall on MDF shelves, waiting to be chosen, picked up, bought, wrapped; books longing for someone to read the words on the pages or look at the pictures inside. The section labels emphasise what’s missing: there’s no Sex, Crime, Horror, Photography, General Art or Religion here.

A triptych from Books, 'Art', showing the empty shelves of 'Art History', 'Artists A-Z' and ’General Art', was shown as part of Rethink: Idea, Output, Exchange, a group show responding to art in the time of austerity. This one day exhibition took place on 4 April 2011, the first day of the new tax year (2011/12) at PS2, 1 Rivington Place, London EC2.

Rethink: Idea, Output, Exchange was curated by Michael Atavar and Portland Green.
