Eighteen Years Old

Artist’s book with hand-assembled art print

Photographs of broken trees and writing without punctuation recall the evening a gang of queer bashers set out to attack a young man out cruising alone in the early 1980s. Eighteen Years Old functions as a document of violence but also as a means to pay tribute to a ‘gay angel’ forty years later.

‘I watch as a group of men a gang of about ten come towards me from the road ahead some carry baseball bats others have clenched fists at the ready to deliver a blow’.

Broken and fallen trees were photographed at Park Zypendaal, Arnhem, the Netherlands in spring 2024 near the location of the attack. Photographs were printed on thin newsprint paper, after which the original digital files were deleted, the newsprint images becoming the decayed originals. The text also functions as a spoken word piece.
